Sixty to seventy percent relative humidity, held without interruption for a decade, is an unusual thing to ask of a room. Most interior spaces in a house swing. A bathroom reaches saturation for twenty minutes after a shower and then dries out. A kitchen climbs while a pot boils and settles back by evening. A garage runs damp through one season and clears in another.

A wine cellar does none of that. It is commissioned to a setpoint and then held there indefinitely, for as long as the collection lives in it. Very few enclosed spaces in a house operate that way. A humidor is one. A walk-in cold room behind a restaurant kitchen is another. Past those, the list runs short.

That difference lands harder on the light fixtures than on almost anything else in the room. The overwhelming majority of residential luminaires are listed for dry locations, and that listing carries an assumption inside it: any moisture that arrives is temporary, and the space ventilates enough to clear it before it accumulates anywhere. A cellar's construction works against that assumption: vapor barrier on the warm side, sealed threshold, a gasketed door, and no ventilation path to the rest of the house.

What follows is what the three location listings actually say, what the two digits in an IP code encode and what they leave out, and which parts of a cellar warrant which specification.

What an IP Number Encodes, and What It Leaves Out

Dry location: a place not normally subject to dampness or wetness. The definition allows for temporary dampness, a building under construction being the standard example, provided ventilation is adequate to keep moisture from accumulating. Bedrooms, hallways, dining rooms, and offices sit here. A fixture with no location mark at all is almost always dry-location only.

Damp location: a place normally or periodically subject to condensation of moisture in, on, or adjacent to the electrical equipment, including partially protected locations. The code-side language covers interior spaces subject to moderate degrees of moisture, and the examples given are some basements, some barns, and some cold-storage warehouses. Of those three, cold storage describes conditions closest to a cellar's.

Wet location: a place where water or another liquid can drip, splash, or flow on or against the equipment. Enclosed showers, open decks, exposed exterior mounting. A wet listing is the higher bar on water exposure, subject to the mounting sub-markings covered below.

IP codes come from a different standard than the location listings, and the two are routinely quoted together despite measuring different things. An IP number is two digits, and each digit is its own scale.

First digit, solids: it runs 0 through 6 and describes protection against solid objects entering the enclosure. Zero is no protection. The middle of the range steps down through objects larger than 50 millimeters, 12.5, 2.5, and 1 millimeter. Five is dust-protected, meaning dust may enter but not in quantities that interfere with operation, and six is dust-tight. In a sealed cellar this digit does very little work.

Second digit, liquids: it runs 0 through 8 and describes protection against water arriving from outside the enclosure. One is vertically dripping water. Two is dripping water with the enclosure tilted up to 15 degrees. Three is spray up to 60 degrees off vertical. Four is splashing from any direction. Five and six are water projected from a nozzle, low pressure and high. Seven and eight are immersion, temporary and continuous.

Read that second scale again and notice what is absent from it. Every step describes liquid water arriving from somewhere, in a defined quantity, at a defined angle or pressure. None of it describes air held at high relative humidity for years. None of it describes vapor condensing onto a surface. The IP scale was written to grade ingress, and sustained humidity is not an ingress event.

That is why an IP number by itself is a weak answer to the cellar question, and why the location listing is the mark to look for first. A fixture can carry a respectable second digit and still be listed dry-location only, because the two systems are answering different questions. Ask for the listing. Treat any IP number on the sheet as supplementary detail.

Condensation Is a Surface Temperature Question

Condensation forms on a surface when that surface sits at or below the dew point of the air touching it. The dew point is not a property of the fixture. It is a property of the air in the room, set by temperature and relative humidity together.

Run the number for cellar air. At 55 degrees and 65 percent relative humidity, the dew point works out to roughly 43 degrees. That figure is a calculation from those two inputs and nothing else, and it is the most useful number in this entire subject, because it tells you how cold a surface has to get before water appears on it.

Now put a fixture in that air. A luminaire mounted inside the cellar sits at room temperature or slightly above it, since even an efficient LED puts some heat into its own housing. Room temperature here is 55 degrees, twelve degrees clear of the dew point. A fixture living entirely inside the cellar envelope is not going to sweat, and a damp listing is not there to solve condensation on the lens.

A cellar is not uniform, and writing one blanket note across the whole schedule either specifies past what several zones need or leaves a gap in the one that mattered.

Inside the sealed envelope, exposed: rack-integrated runs, display niches, toe-kick fixtures, anything mounted on or into the racking. These sit in cellar air permanently and have no relief. Damp listing is the right call, and it is the right call on any fixture that becomes hard to reach once the racks are loaded.

Inside the envelope, recessed through a plane: ceiling cans and any fixture recessed through a wall or ceiling plane. Damp listing, plus two additional markings on the housing that the next section covers.

The door reveal and the glass: a glass cellar door is the coldest large surface in the assembly, and it is the surface that shows condensation first on its outer face when the marine layer sits over the coast in the morning. Fixtures mounted in or immediately beside a door jamb occupy the wettest microclimate the room produces. Damp listing there without argument.

Outside the envelope: the tasting area, the approach, anything on the warm side of the vapor barrier. Standard dry-location product is correct in those positions and there is no return in specifying beyond it.

One more component deserves a line: an LED strip run inside an unsealed channel extrusion is a separate case from a luminaire, since the extrusion is not a listed enclosure and behaves on its own terms.

A recessed fixture is the only category in a cellar where the listing on the trim is an incomplete specification. The housing behind it carries two additional markings, and they are unrelated to each other.

IC rating governs whether the housing may sit in direct contact with insulation. A non-IC housing requires a clearance from insulation on all sides, which means a deliberate void in the thermal layer at every fixture location. On a cellar ceiling built to the insulation values these rooms need, those voids add up across a fixture count.

Airtight is a separate, measured designation. A housing labeled airtight has been tested for air leakage by a standardized method, ASTM E283, at a set pressure difference across the assembly, and the threshold commonly written into energy standards is no more than 2.0 cubic feet per minute at 75 pascals. The same language calls for the housing to be sealed to the finished ceiling with a gasket or caulk, since a tight can set into a loose hole leaks regardless of its own rating.

For a cellar with a ceiling cavity above it, specify both. Air on the cellar side is being held at a humidity the surrounding assembly was never designed to carry, and any of it migrating upward reaches surfaces at temperatures nobody is controlling. Airtight IC housings are ordinary catalog items across the specification-grade downlight lines.

What Belongs on the Fixture Schedule

Specification language is where all of this either holds or quietly does not.

Name the listing, not a description: "Suitable for Damp Locations" is a mark a laboratory applies to a tested product. "Moisture resistant," "humidity rated," and "sealed construction" are manufacturer copy with no defined meaning behind them. If a cut sheet states no location listing, treat the fixture as dry-location only.

Call out housing material and finish separately: The listing says nothing about what the fixture is made of. Two damp-listed downlights, one in painted steel and one in powder-coated aluminum with stainless trim hardware, will look very different at year ten in the same room.

Schedule the recessed housing as its own line item: IC rating and airtight designation belong on the drawing alongside the trim and the lamp; neither should be assumed to arrive with them.

Assign the listing zone by zone: A single note reading "all fixtures damp rated" is faster to write and buries the reasoning. A schedule that assigns the listing by position tells a bidder what the room is doing and why, and it survives a value-engineering pass far better than a blanket instruction does.

One boundary worth stating plainly: choosing fixtures is a design and specification exercise, and the installation itself belongs to a licensed electrician working to the requirements that apply to the job.

Choosing Between Them for a Specific Run

These three are defined categories, and a fixture carries one of them as a mark applied by the testing laboratory that listed it. They are not manufacturer tiers.

The distinction that matters here is the one between dry and damp, and it is narrower than the words suggest. A damp listing addresses moisture and condensation on and around the fixture. It does not address direct water contact, and nothing in a properly built cellar should be producing direct water contact anyway. What the damp listing buys in a cellar is tolerance for a room that is permanently moist and never dries out.

TIP: Dew point tracks temperature as much as humidity, so relative humidity alone cannot compare two rooms' condensation margins. A 55 degree cellar and a 68 degree tasting room, both at 65 percent, sit roughly 12 degrees apart in dew point.

The case that changes is a fixture whose body does not stay inside the cellar. A recessed housing extends through the ceiling plane into whatever sits on the other side. A wall-mounted fixture back-boxed into an exterior wall takes on part of that wall's temperature. Where the space beyond is warmer than the cellar, which is the usual arrangement in Southern California where cellars are built inside the conditioned envelope, the housing runs warm and stays clear. Where that space runs colder than the cellar, the housing becomes the coldest thing in the room and the margin to 43 degrees narrows quickly.

How Continuous Humidity Works on Fixture Materials

Setting condensation aside, moist air on its own is a load on materials, and it is the load a damp listing is largely built for.

Gasketing and sealing: a damp-listed luminaire is assembled with sealing at joints where a dry-listed one has none. A gasket at the lens, a sealed cable entry, a wiring compartment closed against room air rather than open to it. That construction is the working difference between the two listings, and it is what a specifier is actually buying.

Housing material and finish: aluminum housings develop surface oxidation in continuously moist air, which is invisible on a concealed fixture and obvious on an exposed one. Powder coat performs well as long as the film stays unbroken, since a chip at an edge gives moisture a start on the substrate underneath. Stainless hardware is the durable specification for anything mounted where it stays in view for the life of the room.

Fastener and hardware pairing: dissimilar metals in contact in permanently moist air corrode faster than either metal does alone. A plain steel screw driven into an aluminum housing is a common enough pairing to be worth naming on a schedule rather than leaving to whatever ships in the box.

What New Build and Remodel Each Decide for Cellar Lighting

An open stud bay is the one object that separates a new-construction lighting plan from a remodel's. In new construction, that bay sits exposed: bare studs, joist space overhead, and a vapor barrier that has not been stapled shut yet. Two fixtures rated at the same lumens, mounted at the same distance, can put a tight bright disc across three bottles or a soft even wash across a full course, depending only on the width of the optic in front of the emitter. The output is identical. The room is not.

Beam angle is also the variable most often left to whoever supplies the fixtures, which is how it ends up unstated on projects where every other number was argued over line by line.

What Beam Angle Actually Measures

Choosing Against Rack Depth

A rack face is not a plane. The front rim of an opening and the surface deeper inside it sit at different throws from the same fixture, so a single beam angle covers two distances at once.

The penalty is heavier at short throws. At a 3-foot throw, a surface one foot further back sits at 4 feet and receives about 56 percent of the center illuminance reaching the front rim. At an 8-foot throw, that same extra foot leaves about 79 percent. Close mounting delivers higher intensity at the cost of evenness through the depth.

Width behaves the opposite way. Across one foot of depth, a 24-degree beam widens by about 5 inches; a 40-degree beam widens by about 9. A wide optic aimed into a deep opening keeps spreading all the way back, which is useful when that depth holds several bottles and wasteful when it holds one.

The depth question to settle first: whether the surface being lit sits at the opening or well behind it. Those two answers pull the beam angle in opposite directions at the same mounting distance, and only one of them can be right for a given run.

Beam angle and fixture count are linked directly. Narrowing the optic shrinks each pool and raises the number of positions needed to cover the same run of racking, while widening it does the reverse and lowers the count at the cost of peak intensity on any one target.

The overlap arithmetic comes directly from the definition. If two adjacent pools meet exactly where each has fallen to half its center value, that meeting point receives half from one fixture plus half from the other, which puts it level with either center. Spacing positions so the beam edges just touch produces a run with no visible seam between pools.

Pull them further apart and the seam drops below both peaks. Push them closer and the overlap zone climbs above the peaks and becomes the brightest band on the wall. The beam angle chosen at the start sets how much margin there is to get that spacing right, since the seam between two wide pools shifts less for the same positioning error.

What belongs on the drawing: a degree value beside each fixture's lumen and color figures on the lighting schedule, together with the throw distance it was chosen against. The two numbers together mean something; either one alone means very little.

Why the label on the box is not the spec: ANSI C78.379-2006 (S2020), published through NEMA, classifies the beam patterns of reflector lamps, and the trade abbreviations in common use trace back to that classification. They are not applied consistently across catalogs, even within one source. The Open Lighting Product Directory's entry on recessed accent lights places very narrow spot at 2 to 5 degrees, narrow spot at 6 to 9, spot at 10 to 15, and narrow flood at 20 to 25. The same directory's entry on GU10 lamps sets a different scale entirely: very narrow spot under 8 degrees, narrow spot 8 to 15, spot 8 to 20, narrow flood 20 to 35, flood 35 to 40, and wide flood 55 to 60. The two pages disagree on where narrow spot ends and spot begins, and neither ladder is the industry standard; each is one catalog's convention.

Each of those labels covers a band, and a band is a range. At a 4-foot throw, the 10-degree end of that "spot" band lights about 8 inches of wall and the 15-degree end lights about 13. Two fixtures can both be sold as spots and differ by half again in pool width.

Why the Same Lumens Read Brighter in a Narrow Beam

Choosing Against Mounting Distance

Beam angle only produces a usable dimension once a distance is attached to it. The width of the pool at any surface is plain trigonometry: two times the throw distance times the tangent of half the beam angle. A 24-degree beam covers about 15 inches at a 3-foot throw and about 41 inches at 8 feet.

Those widths run out to the 50 percent boundary. Visible light continues past every one of them, out toward the field angle. Intensity meanwhile follows the inverse-square relationship: double the throw and center illuminance drops to one quarter, because the same flux now spreads over four times the area.

A fixture picked for a 3-foot throw and installed at 6 feet delivers a quarter of the center value it was selected for, across a pool twice as wide. That is the whole reason the same beam angle that works at one mounting position fails at another. A close-mounted position under a shelf calls for a wide optic; a position set back across an aisle calls for a tighter one, or the pool spreads past the racking onto the floor.

Beam angle has a specific definition, and it is narrower than most catalog copy suggests. The Illuminating Engineering Society defines it as the angle between the two directions at which intensity has fallen to 50 percent of the maximum, measured in a plane through the nominal beam centerline. Half the peak is the boundary, and everything outside it still receives light.

Field angle is the companion figure, measured the same way at 10 percent of maximum. The IES definition carries a note worth reading twice: in certain fields of application, beam angle was formerly measured to that 10 percent point. An older number and a newer number can both be labeled beam angle and mean different things.

The reason a narrow beam reads hot is arithmetic. A beam occupies a cone, and the solid angle of that cone grows quickly as the angle opens. A 24-degree cone spans roughly 0.137 steradians; a 40-degree cone spans roughly 0.379. Push the same lumen package through the narrower of the two and the intensity along the center axis runs about 2.8 times higher.

Open to 60 degrees and the gap against 24 degrees is roughly six to one on center intensity, with total lumens unchanged the whole way. This is why manufacturers publish center-beam candlepower alongside lumens on accent products. Lumens describe how much light left the fixture; center-beam candlepower describes how hard it lands in the middle of the pool.

The 50 percent definition matters here too. The edge of the beam angle is the place where intensity has already halved, so a narrow pool carries a two-to-one falloff across a span that may be only a few inches wide at cellar throws. That gradient over a short distance is what the eye registers as a hot spot.

Why output alone is a weak lever: the tight fixture and the wide fixture in that comparison carry the same lumen rating. Reaching for a lower-lumen lamp adjusts a number that was never the difference between the two rooms in the first place.

TIP: Ask what a beam angle produces at the fixture's actual mounting distance in the room. A published angle describes the optic by itself, and the same optic spreads across four times the area when the distance doubles.

The cleanest way to pick the number is backward. Decide the width the pool should cover, fix the throw distance, and solve: beam angle equals two times the arctangent of half the target width divided by the throw.

Thirty inches of coverage at a 4-foot throw calls for roughly 35 degrees. Twenty-four inches at a 6-foot throw calls for roughly 19 degrees. Twenty inches at 4 feet calls for roughly 23. Same arithmetic, different targets and distances, three different answers.

One limit applies to that formula. The width it returns is the 50 percent width, and light continues past it. If the target is a single bottle face and the surround should stay dark, the field angle governs the spill, and a tight beam angle paired with a loose field angle puts light where nobody asked for it.

A full course of bottles is a different target from one bottle. An accent aimed at a standout label and a general wash across a bay of racking begin from different target widths, and carrying one optic through both is the most common way a single number gets used four times on a drawing where it fits once.

WARNING: Changing a beam angle by swapping the fixture is electrical work. A licensed electrician should handle any fixture swap. Optical accessories that change beam angle without a swap are a different matter and do not require rewiring.

None of this makes output irrelevant. It makes output the second question. The first is how wide the light arrives, because that number governs whether a fixed lumen package lands as a bright disc on three labels or an even field across a whole bay, and it is settled on a drawing long before a fixture ships.

The wine wall design had a three-bottle deep rack with movable glass panels on the front, while the back had one-bottle deep racks. The glass used for the project was frameless, made of a single pane.

A U-channel was used to reinforce the glass panels, and insulation materials were added within the U-channel to improve insulation for the modern glass wine cellar.

To address this issue, the team partnered with Dan from US Cellar Systems to develop a custom cooling system that could fit in the dining area of the residential space. The team installed an LPQ 12000 TE Split Cooling System supplied by US Cellar Systems.

This cooling unit has a capacity of 12,000 BTUs and 1 ½ horsepower, effectively improving the insulation capabilities of the glass wine cellar. To maintain a clean and aesthetically pleasing appearance, the team decided to conceal the cooling unit within the soffit, ensuring that wires and coils were not visible.

The team also used spray foam with a vapor barrier to fill gaps in the cellar’s U-channel and soffit, insulating and protecting the entire cellar from sudden temperature changes outside.

Applying spray foam eliminates the risk of unchecked humidity and temperature fluctuations that can damage your wine collection. California experiences temperatures ranging from 105°F in June to August to 23°F in December to February annually, making it essential to have proper insulation to protect your wine collection.

It’s the style one would go for if you’re looking to create a visually tranquil space, especially when it can be seen from other parts of the home.

This home’s wine cellar can be found in between the family room and formal dining area – a perfect spot to conveniently get some wine whatever the occasion is. The small room was previously a powder room with a sliding door, under the stairs, so you can imagine the irregularity of the room’s ceiling and shape.

Using traditional design in a relatively compact space can potentially make it feel smaller and more cramped. But the clean lines, surfaces, and pattern of modern design can help us make use of the size of a space. Or even better, modern wine cellar designs make a room feel bigger.

Black-Framed Glass Wine Cellar Door

Welcoming guests into this lovely wine cellar is a single glass door with black metal framing. The glass panel is dual-paned which means that it is composed of two glass panels sandwiching a “spacer”. These spacers typically contain argon gas, to enhance its insulation capabilities.

The door also features a simple, 24-inch, metal handle that one can easily grip and pull when entering and leaving the cellar.

For security, the door is equipped with a manual lock and key system, and a separate magnetic lock to ensure the door is tightly closed when it’s not in use.

The Left Tequila Wall

Upon entering this modern wine cellar, to the left you’ll see what our clients like to call their “tequila wall”. Dedicated for all things tequila, this wall is clad with a custom made wooden wine rack built from white ripped oak.

The arrangement and shape of the individual shelves in the tequila wall are unconventional too. In the middle section, you’ll find a lighted shelf which we custom-built with acrylic LED panels. These panels give the bottles a special glow from the bottom.

In some parts of the shelf, we cut out about ½ inch into the wood to create channels for LED ribbon lights. This enhanced the shelf’s character as the lighting emphasized the rich color of the wood.

The Main Wine Wall

Right across the tequila wall is the main wine wall which features four reveal rows that display the bottles in a slightly inclined position.

Crate storage of various sizes and shapes occupies the upper section of the rack where you can currently find wine bottles stored upright. At the bottom section, you can find deep horizontal storage spaces that can store bottles in a cork-forward way.

The Tools Rack

Near the main wine wall is a half-wall –height wooden rack intended for the decanters and glass stemware. There is ample counterspace on top so the owners can safely and comfortably pour a glass of wine.

Again, like all the other wooden racks in this cellar, the tools rack is also made from lacquer-polished white ripped oak.

The Rack With the Wine Cooling

Lastly, opposite the tools racks is where you can find our custom-made wine rack that doubles as a cover up for the cooling unit. This rack is directly beneath the staircase, so the height wasn’t as tall as the other wooden wine racks.

This racking consists of four rows of deep horizontal racks that store wine bottles in a cork-forward fashion. Beneath these rows is a wooden louvered grill where cool air from the refrigeration unit can easily pass through.

Custom Metal Wine Racks with Special Lighting

For this home’s metal wine cellar racks , we installed 17 rows of VintageView’s Vino Rails and them a few inches in front of a white stone wall.

These rows are lined up in four columns, grouped by twos. The metal racks are attached to metal posts fixed onto the floor and ceiling at the ends.

To give this side of the display some personality, we attached cool-toned LED lights at the back of the metal posts to give that subtle glow. From the outside (and through the glass door), the metal racking display alone already looks stunning!

Metal Racks on the Ceiling?

Here’s another interesting feature you don’t always see in typical wine cellars — racks on the ceiling!

To match the stylish, contemporary interiors, we added tiling work on the ceiling. This included the surface right beneath the stairs. We also installed individual metal bottle holders on the tiles for an impressive display.

Modern Split-Type Cooling System for That Year-Round Temperature Control

A wine cellar wouldn’t be complete without its dedicated cooling system. Between self-contained and split-type, we decided that a ductless split-type was the best option for this space.

This small room didn’t have a lot of wall space to install a duct or a self-contained system. To solve the issue we brought in the RM4600 wine cellar cooling unit by US Cellars Systems.

This is a system where the condenser is attached to the evaporator via a coil. We ran the coil up to the attic where we placed the condensing unit.

This powerful cooling unit would work hand-in-hand with the cellar’s insulation to keep all the wines fresh and of quality!

The horizontal racks are separated by vertical reveal rows, highlighted by a channel of LED strip lighting, creating a stunning visual effect and highlighting the beautiful wine bottle labels stored there.

Curated by executive culinarians, Nicco’s menu is brimming with fresh ingredients straight from the farm, and the finest fish and meat sourced with precision.

Our goal then for this wine room was to create a space that was equally astounding as the restaurant’s grandeur; a commercial wine cellar that’s a treat for the senses and helps the business serve wine as fresh as its food.

Welcoming Guests with Gold-Plated Glass Doors

While an all-glass wine cellar is common and beneficial for commercial wine stores and restaurants, Nicco’s wine room has solid walls on three sides and a towering glass door on the fourth. Customers can have a glimpse of the wine cellar when they pass in front of the door, and they can go inside to see the wines up close as we made sure the room was spacious enough for people to comfortably walk about

We maintained the touches of gold reflected throughout the restaurant. Besides lining the external walls with gold plating, we also custom-made their glass door with gold-plated framing and gold-plated metal handles.

Every time you use the door, you definitely feel that good seal, not just because of the weight of the door, but also because of its perfect fit.

While frameless glass wine cellar doors are the ultimate modern vibe, adding framing to glass doors, especially large ones like this, further secures the dual-paned tempered glass.

Custom Commercial Wine Racks as Main Display Curators

As they enter the cellar, the customers are immediately greeted by rows and rows of beautifully crafted wooden wine racks, left and right. White oak was the primary choice of wood for this cellar, but we decided to stain it with a rustic color to give a traditionally classy feel. The racks are secured from floor to ceiling and have a total height of 15feet. In order to reach the top rows, our team installed and attached two custom rolling ladders on both racks.

To store about 4,000 wine bottles in a sophisticated way, we curated different styles of racking compartments. The bottom sections are comprised of spacious crate/wine box storage that are also used to store bottles vertically, while the top sections are all single-deep standard 750 racks. At breast height, separating the upper and lower racks are drawers and a reveal row that displays bottles in a 45-degree angle. This row is well-lighted with LED lights hidden behind a custom light valance.

Now here’s the surprise. Nicco’s wine cellar is actually two wine cellars in one. We call them Zone 1 and Zone 2. As we’ve learned throughout the years (and as wine collectors ourselves), different wines have different optimum conditions to stay fresh. For example, reds can be preserved in a slightly higher temperature than whites.

So for Nicco’s, we created two zones, separated by a tall, frameless glass wine room door. In the first zone (the zone immediately after the main wine cellar door), it’s 55 degrees. In the second zone, where you can find the whites like champagnes, sauvignon blancs, etc., it’s between 40-45 degrees.

Like the 1st zone, the 2nd zone also has ceiling-height custom wine racks. In there, bottles are displayed in more styles of racking compartments like metal horizontal storage racks.

By having these two zones, Nicco’s ensures every type of wine is preserved perfectly and served in their best quality.

In this custom wine cellar door, our team decided to use glass panels and a double glass door as a front enclosure to protect the wine collection, conserve the cool temperature, and match the modern racks inside the home wine room.

Although single-paned glass is generally recommended for wine cellars, we use double-paned tempered glass with H-shape weather strips for sealing and soundproofing.

This was done to prevent condensation and moisture formation inside the glass wine cellar, which could potentially harm the bottle corks and labels. With an open floor plan that allows a clear view of the home’s different areas, the wine cellar had to match the house’s overall aesthetic and be as visually appealing as the rest of the space.

The team opted for a modern metal racking to achieve the desired contemporary wine cellar. They customized the wine rack with a black satin finish to give it a formal appearance. These metal racks are W-shaped and have grooves on the rods. The rods are secured onto a backer bar of the same material, and the tips have rubber finishing caps for safety. The metal backer bars were then mounted on a sturdy wooden wall.

The cellar has a pair of modern, W-shaped metal wine racks that can hold 27 rows of bottles. The team installed three pairs of these racks on the left side and three pairs on the right side of the cellar. Thanks to the racks’ triple-deep capacity, this cellar’s entire metal racking system can accommodate up to 486 bottles of wine. We can customize the racks to fit your needs if you have a different space size.

The modern wine cellar racking gave the impression that the bottles were floating, while the floating shelves kept the upright bottles as stunning as the others on the metal wine racks.

Complete with modern, dual-paned wine cellar doors, triple-deep metal wine racking, and a cooling system that efficiently keeps the entire collection fresh at 55-58°F, this 2oft long x 15ft wide hospitality wine cellar surely keeps the wine and dine experience one to remember!

Contemporary Wooden Wine Storage Shelves

The home’s interior utilized a significant amount of white oak, and the team carried on this theme by incorporating wood into the cellar’s cabinetry, open shelves, and backer boards.

Restaurant Wine Cellar Designs for an Upscale Steakhouse from Orange County’s Premier Builder

The expert team at Cachet Wine Cellars has created many incredible restaurant wine cellar designs for our Orange County clients, and now they’ve recently completed another beautiful commercial wine cellar at Papi Steak in Las Vegas.

In gist, the original restaurant wine cellar design fell short in several areas. From an inadequate cooling system to poorly fitted doors and a racking setup that limited accessibility, it was clear that we had to rethink the entire design and plan of the wine cellar.

When you’re dealing with a commercial design, most of the time, you’ll need a split system cooling unit. Some people do self-contained cooling units for budget reasons, but they don’t satisfy the purpose functionality-wise. A self-contained unit for a commercial space is never going to work, so we really had to explain it to the client. For the size of their wine cellar, a self-contained system was not powerful enough to get cool air from one end of the cabinet to another. It was just very far.

Luxury Doors to Impress

The transformation of the doors was also a game-changer. Standing tall at seven feet with wood frames and dual-paned glass, they added a touch of elegance to the cellar. The doors were custom-made with 60-inch handles and Q-lon seals that keep air leaks at bay. Sealing the doors guarantees that the cool air will stay and regenerate quickly no matter how many times the cellar is opened daily.

There are a lot of thousand-dollar bottle wines and champagnes in this commercial wine cellar, which is a common sight for a collection designed for profit. If we were to have designed the entire cellar from the beginning, we would recommend more advanced security locks for the doors. For this cellar, we agreed to keep the original traditional-style lock as what the original builder had installed.

Racking Up their High-End Wine Collection

We didn’t stop at the doors; the racking system also had a makeover. Although the original racking was robustly made from VintageView, the order and combination were not very functional. It gave people a hard time reaching for the bottles at the back as they had to remove the bottles in front first.

So, we replaced them all with VintageView triple-deep racks gleaming in gold. They held the bottles well and adorned the walls, showcasing the collection in style.

The upper sections of the wine cellar were for display purposes only. We filled it mostly with dummy bottles, so no ladders were required like other tall wine displays

Keeping it Running for Decades

With the renovation complete, we spoke with the clients about its maintenance. It is very important for every wine cellar to be periodically checked, especially the cooling systems. With a big operation like this, we recommend that regular check-ups be scheduled every six months to ensure everything stays in shape. By maintaining your wine cellars, disruptions are kept at bay, and guests are always ensured the best drinking experience.

We’ve built commercial wine cellars that have lasted for more than 20 years, such as the one at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. We periodically checked their cellar every three months. Custom Modern Wine Room with Spectacular RGB Lights at The Peaks

Modern Glass French Doors

Clean, minimalist lines, glass, and metal characterize modern wine cellars. It was easy to decide that his home’s wine cellar must have glass doors, so dual-paned glass panels were brought in to enclose the front part of the cellar.

Dual-paned glass is engineered glass that involves two single glass panels sandwiching a “spacer,” most often argon gas. Dual-paned glass has better insulation capabilities than single-paned glass, but the latter can also be enough in some cases.

One pair of French doors welcomes guests into the cellar.

Compared to double doors, French doors open outward and require people to pull the handles if they are entering the wine room.

Our team also installed magnets between the doors so the doors can easily lock into place when closed.

Advanced Insulation and Cooling Combo

To cool this custom modern wine room, we chose the HS 8600 cooling system from US Cellar Systems. The HS 8600 is a high static, fully ducted cooling system that does not produce any significant noise and vibrations inside the cellar. This is because the set is designed in a way where the “noisy” components are installed outside the cellar.

Since its motor is thermally protected, the HS 8600 can perform well even in high-temperature areas like Nevada while maintaining static pressure.

We ran the copper tubing through the walls and into the condenser behind the wine cellar before working on the wine room’s insulation.

Speaking of insulation, since this is new construction, the team was able to work on the walls from scratch. We added 3-4 inches of closed-cell spray foam on the backwood, then installed plywood, greenboard, and mudsand, added some texture, and then finally painted. We chose an almost brick red color for the paint to complement the walls outside the cellar.

Glossy Contemporary Wine Racks for Standards and Magnums

Modern wine cellar displays offer a sophisticated feel to the entire room. Metal wine racks are often brought in as primary racks. However, for this contemporary wine room, we custom-built an entire wine rack with a white, glossy finish.

The lower section of this wine rack is composed of 20 drawers, 4 open bins, and 12 triangular bins. Each drawer has 6 black metal racks inside to hold standard bottles horizontally, while the triangular bins store inventory in a cork-forward manner.

Just above the drawer section is a spacious countertop area used to safely and conveniently decant wines and handle bottles.

The remaining upper section of the rack is filled with double-deep black metal rods to cradle both standard-sized 750ml bottles and magnum-sized bottles.

A large, empty wall space is at the center of the custom wine rack, which we also painted. This is a great spot to display unique artwork or a glass mirror.

920 bottles can be stored in this custom wine rack, and there’s still enough space to expand if the owners plan on growing their collection!

Modern RGB Lighting for Different Moods

One of the highlights of this Las Vegas custom home wine room is its lights. White and warm LED lights are popularly used in wine cellars because they help create a dramatic scene. They are often installed as puck lights and channel lights.

However, the client went for a different lighting plan for this sophisticated contemporary wine room. They were excited about putting up RGB lights inside the wine cellar so the colors could shine through the glass enclosure, slipping into the adjacent room.

The RGB lights we installed are remote-controlled and can be set to different colors according to your desired mood. There’s an option to have the lights flicker, and an option to keep it fixed.

With many settings, this wine cellar can visually transform just by playing around with the lights!

Planning This Wine Cellar in Relation to the Larger Space

From the street just outside the house, it’s unmistakable that this home appreciates design and style. With a professionally landscaped front lawn, contemporary exterior windows, and minimalist off-white exterior cladding, it’s a clear-cut decision that the interiors will have to look as good! And that’s what we tried to achieve for this new wine cellar.

Down the semi-open basement, you’ll find the family’s entertainment den, complete with a pool table, theatre area, bar section, and an enclosed gym. Our team had the privilege to work on the space from the ground up, so we were able to use the same glass enclosure design on both the gym area and the wine cellar.

At that time, the home was being rebuilt. We had the chance to reframe the walls , run the line sets, install the cooling unit and lights easily, and add insulation. The entire basement was quite spacious, and there was plenty of potential to curate the floor layout.

As soon as you walk down the stairs, you’re immediately greeted by the wine cellar and gym on either side. This layout creates a custom hallway that leads to the main area where you can find the pool table, bar, theatre, and, of course, the entrances to both the wine cellar and home gym.

For this home’s metal wine cellar racks , we installed 17 rows of VintageView’s Vino Rails and them a few inches in front of a white stone wall.

These rows are lined up in four columns, grouped by twos. The metal racks are attached to metal posts fixed onto the floor and ceiling at the ends.

Here’s another interesting feature you don’t always see in typical wine cellars — racks on the ceiling!

Modern Split-Type Cooling System for That Year-Round Temperature Control

A wine cellar wouldn’t be complete without its dedicated cooling system. Between self-contained and split-type, we decided that a ductless split-type was the best option for this space.

This small room didn’t have a lot of wall space to install a duct or a self-contained system. To solve the issue we brought in the RM4600 wine cellar cooling unit by US Cellars Systems.

This is a system where the condenser is attached to the evaporator via a coil. We ran the coil up to the attic where we placed the condensing unit.

This powerful cooling unit would work hand-in-hand with the cellar’s insulation to keep all the wines fresh and of quality!
