Wooden wine racks are one of the best ways to store and display wine collection, like this project in Newport Beach, Orange County

From the very first walkthrough of this Richland residence in Newport Beach, we knew this wine cellar could never be treated as  a secondary space. As wine cellar designers at Cachet Wine Cellars, we believe that wooden wine racks are not furniture but architectural features that must be earned in a luxury home.

This custom home wine cellar was meant to be a destination. It can be a place where an immersive experience of craftsmanship, engineering, and lifestyle comes together. Every detail we considered focused on how the wooden wine racks could serve as the showpiece of wine collections and prized bottle displays.

Shaping the Vision: Planning Wooden Wine Racks Around an Irregular Space

The irregular shape of the room became a challenge for our design process. Instead of imposing symmetry on the room where it doesn’t belong, we designed the wooden wine racks to respond to the room’s irregularities. Our client wanted a cellar that was curated and intentional, not crowded and functional.

At Cachet Wine Cellars, we worked out how each wooden wine rack would relate to the walls, corners, and views of the room, so that the home wine cellar felt balanced. The effect is a layout where the wooden wine racks, along with the other components such as the wine cellar cooling systems, doors, and lighting, seem to have grown organically in the space. It maximizes the storage while maintaining a sense of calm.

Crafting Wooden Wine Racks With Precision and Purpose

The core of the project is the custom wooden wine racks made from natural alder wood, chosen for its warmth, longevity, and aging qualities. Each racking system was crafted to a specific depth of 13 ½ inches to ensure proper bottle support and airflow.

We designed the system to accommodate around 1,500 bottles, combining magnum racks for champagne and other large-format wines, cork-forward storage for standard 750ml bottles, and horizontal display rows that add visual interest and depth.

Building a Wine Cellar Around Wooden Wine Racks: Tips From the Pros

At the lower levels, diamond bins and chevron storage add structural interest and capacity, accompanied by case storage for wine collectors who purchase wine in bulk. Wooden grills were added for aesthetic purposes to break up transitions and enhance the overall look of the wooden wine racks.

A Center Display That Translates Wooden Wine Racks into an Experience

We created the central island as a pause in the cellar design. This central feature, designed entirely around wooden wine racks, is both functional and experiential.

It features stemware storage to keep glasses accessible, a tabletop for wine tastings or bottle displays, and additional case storage seamlessly integrated below.

Accent lighting was strategically incorporated by our wine cellar experts into the design to emphasize bottle silhouettes and wood grain patterns, making the central display a sculptural element without dominating the wooden wine racks. The central island converts the cellar into a space that is meant to be experienced, enjoyed, and shared with others.

Lighting System that Highlights the Prized Bottle Display

Lighting was one of the most meticulously planned aspects of this project. To showcase the quality of the wooden wine racks, our experts at Cachet Wine Cellars incorporated corner-round LED lights that highlight wine displays with accuracy and subtlety. Channel and horizontal lighting is incorporated throughout the wine rack design, ensuring continuity and visual interest on the walls.

Acrylic light panels ensure well-rounded ambient lighting without harsh shadows, while a round chandelier suspended from the ceiling adds warmth and architectural interest. Each level of lighting was incorporated to showcase the wooden wine racks, not detract from them.

Engineering Quiet Performance Behind the Wooden Wine Racks

This wine cellar lighting suits perfectly inside this traditional wine cellar in Newport Beach, Orange County

Since the residence does not have an attic space, we were tasked with engineering a cooling system that performed perfectly and remained inconspicuous. Behind the wooden wine racks, we incorporated a quiet condensing unit and coil that maintains a consistent cellar temperature.

Plywood green board was incorporated to ensure durability, insulation, and moisture resistance. This creates a cellar space that safeguards the wine collection without adding mechanical noise—proof that performance and beauty can coexist behind expertly designed wooden wine racks.

Framing the Cellar With a Barolo Door and Wooden Wine Racks Beyond

The entrance to the cellar was intended as a visual introduction. We called for a Barolo-style, dual-pane framed glass door with a white-painted frame and tempered glass, rated to withstand cellar temperatures of up to 55°. An automatic door button provides a touch of modern convenience. Behind the glass, the wooden wine racks are visible, causing the cellar to become a living display that enhances the surrounding interior even when the door is closed.

Looking Back on the Finished Wooden Wine Racks and Their Effect

Stepping back and appreciating the finished space, it is evident that the wooden wine racks are more than a storage solution—they are an atmosphere solution. The traditional wine cellar with its wooden wine racks is now intentional, sophisticated, and highly personal, reflecting the homeowner’s collection as well as our design aesthetic. As our designer Alex Madison explains:

“When wooden wine racks are designed well, they become part of the home’s architecture—not just a place to store wine, but a place to experience it.”
